[Discussion] I can't be bothered to find a job lol

I recently graduated college. I actually haven't worked in a couple years, my old job was retail. I figured I'd get back into the working mindset by finding some part-time work for a few months then going for something related to my degree.

I'm someone who lets the "meaning" of their job really affect them (retail gradually depressed me). So I can get demoralized if I can't think of anywhere tolerable to work. However, bills must be paid.

Has anyone been in a similar situation? I know the part-time menial work won't be permanent, but it just feels like I'm going to get depressed once I start working. I know it's a good idea to want to work, but I'm just trying to... want it more, see it as a good thing that I want, not just have to do. Thanks!

[Story] I was messy and disorganized two months ago. I got very motivated to keep my house clean after reading a Japanese book about tidying.

I've lived my whole life as a slob. I could never muster the willpower to clean when I could be doing something better, like work or video games.

January 8th, I'm clicking /r/random over and over, and click on /r/konmari. Hmm, something about cleaning like Japanese people. Kept clicking.

The next day, I was going through my browsing history and pulled it up again. I read the FAQ. Googled it. Torrented the audiobook from a private tracker.

So there's this self - help book called 'the life changing magic of tidying up', and I want you guys to know that reading it made me feel very pumped up about keeping my house clean, which was not something I thought was possible.

The book told me to throw all the things away that don't make me happy. It said to touch each item and ask it if it brings me joy.

I began with clothes. I threw all my underwear away, and all my socks. 80% of my long sleeve shirts, 90% of my shorts. I loved all my t-shirts and jeans, lol. I bought myself 4 pairs of merino wool socks, and 4 pairs of modal underwear.

On this day I bought the book from Amazon.

I had to work the next day. I build cars all day. I kept a notebook to write in during my downtime, because the next thing was gonna be rough : books.

I hadn't read anything in about 3 years, preferring audiobooks to print so I can work. I put all my books on the floor, and spent a good 3 hours picking each up and putting it back down. I had a bunch of art books I never used, hyperbole and a half, night vale, wheel of time, and a bunch of Richard Dawkins books signed by the author.

I hadn't read any of it in years. They sound like prized possessions, but really, they brought me no happiness. I sold them all to half - priced books for $400.

I then took ALL of my papers and threw them on the floor. It took a whole day, but by the end I had reduced my paper volume by 95%. My shredder jammed. I threw it away, who needs a shredder when your job has a composter? My filing cabinet was empty. I donated it and kept my papers in a folder.

I got the audiobook version of the 2nd book, listened to it over and over again while working. When I got home again, I tackled my CDs.

I have an external hard drive, AND a bunch of high capacity flash drives! I threw every CD away except for labyrinth and my ghibli stuff.

I tossed my sunscreen, it was expired anyway. Goodbye, empty shelves. I had a bunch of uncomfortable blankets that were given to me as a gift years ago. Donated.

I didn't like any of my bookshelves, and I don't keep books on them anymore anyway. Those will be gone soon.

Now, my house is so easy to clean, I barely even need motivation to do it. But there's no feeling of hopelessness, so I feel like cleaning way more often.

How did you become a tidy person?

It not only is a testament of fulfilling a task, but a picture is a concrete materialization of said endeavor. I feel like doing something and having a picture to look at later at night gives me a reminder that I did good and I can go to sleep proud."

[Story] A Tesla

I'm a college student who works part time as a guard. My work site is filled with cars that are imported/exported weekly. This week they brought in Teslas....and I was amazed. All the cars have their car keys inside that way they can transport them with ease. So I go to the car and there isn't a doorknob/handle, instead there was a button shaped handle that was flat, I pressed it and BAM a doorknob appeared. I couldn't help but laugh with excitement. The interior was amazing and everything.

I daydreamed and saw a better me driving that car in the future. A me with a fit body, a me with a successful job, a me as a (hopefully) great father/husband. I was just fired up and wanted to start working hard and improve myself.

That's about it. Now I'm going to take summer class to graduate faster. Learn a couple useful programs/skills in the summer as well. The toughest thing I will focus on is to lose 40lbs by the end of this year!

2017 is going to be my year!

[Discussion]The problem with motivational quotes

Human behaviour is based on motivation: we choose the course of action that most motivates us. For example, if you are motivated to run a marathon, then you run a marathon: your motivation to run a marathon (pull factor) supersedes all the push factors against running a marathon.

It is no wonder that motivational quotes do not work: people simply read a line. For you to start doing whatever you are trying to get yourself to do, the pull factors simply need to supersede the push factors. Reading a motivational quote will not cause that to happen: how you truly feel about that action will. If you need to read a motivational quote to do something, that means your pull factors are not strong enough, and that line alone is not going to change that.

I think the best example is losing weight. I have heard many people say "I wish I wasn't overweight" and I simply reply to them: of course you wish that, but you are not willing to work for it: even though you wish to lose weight, you wish MORE to live a lifestyle that results in you being overweight. Motivational quotes are similar: you read a line that evokes some magic feeling, but ultimately, the only thing that will decide whether you will actually change your behaviour is whether the pull factors for that particular behaviour supersede the push factors. The determination of that comes from internal factors, not just reading a line.

  • These are events, good or bad, that shaped and made you who you are.

  • What are some things that you can look back 5-10 years from now, and say "THIS TIME was the reason for the way I am now."

  • 2 years ago, I was depressed and directionless. I feared about the future and was paralyzed from doing anything about my situation due to this fear.

  • Because of these few things, my life totally changed for the better.

  • I know that this type of change is possible for everyone, and I would gladly and respectfully debate anyone who disagrees.

  1. Losing 30lbs and keeping it off through acquiring knowledge and application. Now I have zero lack of confidence in body image. And it shows me the power of having a goal, a plan to reach it, consistency, and ability to adjust to unplanned factors,

  2. Becoming a high school teacher. Shows me how that I really care about helping people. Also, it forced me to learn a HUGE amount about psychology to understand why people do the actions that they do.

  3. Discovering mindfulness practice (meditation). Now I have 10x more control of my emotions and can make better decisions. I have zero anxiety, and stressful situations actually push me to work better.

[Story] The Universe's Gift

In our lives, the universe periodically gifts us the opportunity to transform how we live. It's as if life tells us, "Exploring land is cool, huh? Well, how about this: let's dive into the oceans instead." I could also argue that it's always possible -- however, when things are going well, we often ignore the universe's gift, or we are blind to it. Calling it a gift is a little bit of a misnomer. While it offers something that we might not have thought possible, it's not free in the sense that a gift is free.

Imagine life's gift as a crystal ball. At its core, we can see the most perfect version of ourselves. Swirling around are impure clouds marred with failure and defeat. Accepting life's gift is easy, but bringing its essence into being is difficult in every sense of the word. Trials of strength and willpower pave the road to happiness. Hardships mock us as we walk the road to satisfaction. Grief and pain, like wildfire, consume the path to inner peace.

With that in mind, the allure of our perfectly constructed life still holds strong. The life where we are happy with who we are, where we experience joy and love every day, where we are confident, fearless. The hardships ahead are only hurdles in our race to the finish. And so we sprint, ready to conquer the world, to face our demons, to absolve our past sins.

We fall, perhaps before we even get to the first hurdle. We realize that we cannot stand on our own two legs. We cannot walk, much less run. Life stands over us, smirking. Defeated, we can only crawl back to the starting line and try again. And we try again, and fail. Over and over, we fail. We look back at our string of attempts, only to see failures, and no success.

It is at this point when many people resign themselves to an imperfect version of life. They are caught up in one of the swirling visions in the crystal ball. They justify their decisions by settling for a version of life that is "good enough". Unwilling to fight for more, they resign themselves to fate, letting out a sigh of regret as their perfect vision slips away. It's simply the easier way out. In this manner, we reject the universe's gift. The swirling clouds carry us away, and we lose track of the real vision.

And as we tally up our failures, our defeats, with nothing to show in our success column, those who carry on notice something. Somehow, they've managed to not only stand on their own, but start walking. On our journey, we find kindred souls are all around us. We are all at various places in the race to the finish line. Some are still shaky on their feet, but standing. Some have managed to start running. Some, clearing the first hurdle but not quite the second. Very few, at the very end, proudly looking back at the race they've completed.

And we cheer each other on, encouraging those that fall to get back up when all seems hopeless. Slowly, taking baby steps, we hold strong and clear the first hurdle. And if we stay strong and we keep going, until we finally realize that we have become the person we once saw in the crystal ball. It is okay to falter. But if we resign, we doom ourselves to mediocrity and settling. Now that is the only outcome that is not okay.

Apart from all this abstract thinking and storytelling, I can relate where I am in my own life to this. Two weeks ago, I lost the first true love of my life because I pushed her away from me. My mental health issues proved to be too much for me to handle. Everything in my body screamed at me to let go of something I dearly loved. And try as I might, I couldn't defeat the anxiety.

So I resigned. People call me a quitter for not pursuing true love. I question myself, asking if what I had was love. Sometimes I hate myself for quitting. I blame myself for how I treated her, for how I threw her love away. For how I abandoned her when she was always there for me. And perhaps we weren't right for each other. Maybe the timing isn't right.

But the truth is, none of that matters. I made the decision to quit, to backstab, and its consequences are now very real. My first love is now but a painful memory, and I'm waiting for time to help it scar over.

The universe has presented me with its most precious gift. I don't want to quit again. I know how it feels now. I know what it's like to resign. You know what? I don't like that feeling. In fact, I absolutely loathe it. I don't ever want to quit again. Not like that.

So I'm going to go to a therapist. I'm going to address my mental health issues. And I'm not going to compromise any more. There is no more "good enough". I'm going to make a list of my dreams, and I won't stop until I'm there. From this day onwards, I'm going to try my damnedest to make sure that I'm the best version of me that I can be. Not for Nicole. Not for anyone else. Only for me.

[Discussion] Anyone else work 6 days a week, finding it hard what to do with that 7th day?

I already spend a lot of time outdoors as a field ecologist, and walk between 5-10km per day, but still like to get out and do something on my day off or I feel like a lazy bum. The last couple of weekends I have gotten out down to the mountains for a short ramble, but some weekends I just crash and spend all day trying to decide what to, only to find I've wasted my only day off :(

How do you guys make your more 'chilled' days more productive?

[Tool]How I became my own coach!

Ever since I watched this video of a boxer getting motivated in the corner between rounds by his coach, it fascinated me. The focus of the boxer, the energy of the coach the belief that he had in him, you can see in both of their faces, just unreal... It gave me goosebumps. I really wanted to replicate that feeling by myself and I couldn’t just find some guy to shout at me every day so I decided to be that guy myself. The boxer and the coach. I started reading motivational books, printing motivational quotes and hanging them everywhere. Talking to myself in the mirror, repeating all those phrases, believing in myself. Every morning in the shower reading the quotes of my shower curtain getting hyped and ready for a new challenge. I started to be more confident, more enthusiastic about everything. I noticed the change in my attitude, it became more positive. I am just riding this thing and I recommend everyone just to try this and I guarantee you, you will see changes immediately. My point is surround yourself with positive thoughts and repeat them to yourself, some of you might think it’s lame but at some point I swear to god you will feel like shouting that stuff in public!
