I don’t give a f*** what anyone thinks... when you’re a racehorse, right, the reason why they put blinders on these things, ‘cause if you look at the horse on the left or the horse on the right, you’re gonna miss a step. So that’s why those horses have f***ing blinders on and that’s what people should have. When you’re running after something, you should not look left or right. ‘What does this person think? What does that person think?’ No. Go. Go. Go - Jimmy Iovine

[Text] I have lost all drive and everything seems meaningless.
I am right now in an utter impass in my life. I hardly work and merely procrastinate as much as possible, though no one seems to care. I am learning nothing at my job nor do I know how to. I feel like I was led to believe all my life that I just had to follow instructions to be sucessful and yet that's not how the world works.
I am convinced that everything is meaningless because everything from climate change, to radical politics to the economy will end human civilization into an anarchic state by the end of this century. I hardly talk to anyone because I hate small talk and the only thing I can talk about is movies, TV, and books. My parents keep berating me because "most people talk about nothing, why can't you?"
My best friends have all lost touch with me and I live in a country where I don't speak the language and learning attempts have been slow. It also keeps reverting because I have no one to practice with.
Everything seems meaningless, I spend weeks into months literally not doing ANYTHING. I mostly browse the Internet at work, go home, do that a bit more then fall asleep. I mostly walk 40 minutes every day for exercise. I am in therapy but it doesn't seem to be helping. Prozac just makes me even more apathetic and my therapist's advice is mostly just "go do this and write down what you feel. My family doesn't care and they think therapy is useless and I just need to "talk to girls". They also have radically different politics from me and keep treating me like a child.
I am 30, never had any sort of relationship and I am an utter void of a person. Help.

[Story] Today I crushed a major milestone after nearly 20 years of depression
So just to give some background, I am diagnosed ADHD, very high functioning autism spectrum, and with long term depression since about the age of 8. I struggled aggressively with making friends, I struggled in school because I was bored, and my family was a mess so I never felt emotionally safe at home. I had a really emotionally negative childhood.
In high school I had a serious discussion with the headmaster where they floated that I was not capable of completing their program. I graduated with a 1.27.
when I went to university the first time, I had a massive breakdown due to external stressors and I ended up dropping out with a 1.35.
I had no friends, I had no family (that I wanted), and the words that underpinned every one of my interactions and attempts to better myself for the first 20 years of my life were, "you are not good enough".
I told myself things like, "you have no friends, because you don't deserve friends", "you can't be happy because you don't deserve to be happy", "nobody will ever really love you because you're fat & socially awkward".
I knew that this wasn't true, but I felt like people always judged me through the benchmarks that society places on us. As long as those benchmarks said I wasn't worthy, no matter how much I disagreed, others would side with the benchmark.
After dropping out of university, I became suicidal and spent a week trying to find a way to do it without affecting anyone else in the process. I realized that this wasn't physically possible, that there was no way that I could die without at least 1 person having a negative reaction to it.
I checked myself into an outpatient clinic, moved to a new country, got put on ADHD medication, started working out, and started to push the boundaries of my social comfort zone.
we are now 7 years later, and as of today, for the first time in my life I am genuinely happy.
I have friends who I know genuinely love me,
I am finally getting into a physical shape that I am happy with,
I am confident enough to sing in front of people,
I am getting attention from girls for the first time,
I am very successful in my work,
and today I got the final marks from my 2nd attempt at university.
(a First is the highest grade you can get)
For the first time, that self doubt, self hatred, and anxiety is gone. I know I AM GOOD ENOUGH and now I can prove it.
The message I wanted to get out there is that no matter how shit you think your circumstances are, no matter how many times you think you fail to measure up to the standards of others, if you keep trying to progress, you will eventually get there. the road is long, its fucking brutal, and sometimes you stumble into the ditch at the side, but you'll eventually climb out of that ditch, and make it to the next milestone.
You are good enough, you just might need to blow the dust off of your potential so others can recognize it.

5 Habits Scientifically Proven to Improve Your Life [Video]
https://youtu.be/vH7aaSZJT_k (Animated video) I’ve learned dozens of self-help techniques designed to improve my life: affirmations, hypnosis, and the emotional freedom technique– to name a few. Yet, truth be told, most of them don’t work. These self-help miracle cures sound great theory, but don’t live up to the hype. However, among the many self-improvement habits I’ve encountered, there are a select few that really can transform your life. In this video, we’re going to separate the wheat from the chaff: you’re going to learn 5 habits that are scientifically proven to change your life for the better.
- Meditation Research has shown that meditation increases positive emotion, decreases stress, can treat anxiety, and depression, increases willpower, and improves focus. The scientific evidence for the benefits of meditation is overwhelming. As exciting as the benefits might be, few people make a habit of meditation. This is partly because of two widespread misconceptions about what meditation really is: Misconception 1- Meditation is religious: Meditation can be a spiritual practice, but it by no means needs to be. Scientific research on meditation generally focuses on mindfulness which is the practice of focusing on your breathing and becoming aware of your thoughts – there’s nothing woo-woo about it. Misconception 2 – Meditation is about emptying your mind: Many people believe the goal of meditation is to clear your mind of all thoughts. Eliminating all thought is an impossible task. When people think that’s the goal of meditation, they end up frustrated with meditation and give up on it. Meditation isn’t about getting rid of thoughts, it’s about changing your relationship with them. When you meditate, your goal is to become aware of your thoughts, not to make them go away. You’ll still have thoughts while you meditate, you’re just learning to create distance between you and your thoughts so that they don’t control or overwhelm you. ___________________________________________________________________________ Meditation can also be difficult to start because without proper guidance, it can be hard to know if you’re doing it right. Because of this, it can be helpful to start with guided meditations. The app, Calm has a great free series of 5-minute guided meditations that will teach you the fundamentals. Two other good options I’ve used personally are headspace, Tarabrach.com, (among others) you can find online. The benefits of meditation are profound, but it will take time for them to become noticeable in your day-to-day life. Meditation is similar to exercise in this way. When you first start working out, it’s challenging and stressful, and the benefits are minimal, but once you make exercise a habit it becomes enjoyable and the benefits are incredible (for more about how to make a habit stick, check out The Power of Self-Awareness, it includes a step-by-step guide to making any new behavior into an automatic habit). a. Exercise Scientific research has shown that exercise not only strengthens your physical health, it also reduces stress, can be as effective as anti-depressants for treating depression and anxiety, and even improves memory and thinking skills. Statistically, Americans are in dire need of more physical activity; the average adult only exercises 17 minutes per day (which is only four minutes more than seniors over the age of 65). x Most of us know that exercising more would be good for us, that’s why so many people make New Year’s resolutions to stick to a fitness regimen. Unfortunately, 80% of these resolutions fail by February, and 92% fail by the end of the year. If you want to get the benefits of exercising more, what can you do to be among the few who stick to their goals? First, and most importantly, make sure your exercise routine is enjoyable (or at the very least, not overly stressful). If you’re not used to exercising, and you start with a goal to lift weights 5 days a week, you’re very likely to give up on your routine within a few weeks. Instead, start including exercise in your life with something more enjoyable, like practicing basketball. If you want to build muscle, start with a weight-lifting routine that is sustainable – maybe 15-30 minutes to start, then build it up as you get comfortable with that. If by the end of your exercise, you feel miserable and stressed, you’re pushing yourself too hard emotionally, and you’re setting yourself up to burnout within a few weeks.
b. Journaling Experiments have shown journaling can reduce stress and anxiety while also generally improving your mood. A good journal can increase your self-awareness, and help you learn to appreciate the good things in life (we could all use more gratitude). There are hundreds of journaling methods you can experiment with – here’s the template I’ve found to be the most useful (which you can download for free in the description below): Three things that went well today: 1. 2. 3.
What I learned today: 1. 2. 3. This template is based on the recommendation of famed psychologist Martin Seligman, he writes, “Every night for the next week, set aside ten minutes before you go to sleep. Write down three things that went well today and why they went well. The three things need not be earthshaking in importance (‘My husband picked up my favorite ice cream for dessert on the way home from work today”). Next to each positive event, answer the question ‘Why did this happen?’ For example, if you wrote that your husband picked up ice cream, write ‘because my husband is really thoughtful sometimes’ or ‘because I remembered to call him from work and remind him to stop by the grocery store’. Writing a daily journal is powerful because it helps us combat the human tendency to fixate on the negative. Author Hara Estroff Marano writes, “Our capacity to weigh negative input so heavily most likely evolved for a good reason—to keep us out of harm's way. From the dawn of human history, our very survival depended on our skill at dodging danger. The brain developed systems that would make it unavoidable for us not to notice danger and thus, hopefully, respond to it.” By default, we overvalue the negative events, thoughts, and emotions in our life, and undervalue the positive. Taking a few minutes to write about the positive can help combat that tendency. I included a section titled, “what did I learn today,” so that I could reflect on what happened throughout the day and take in the most valuable lessons. I’ve found this to be extremely helpful because it allows me to get a sort of bird’s eye view on my own behavior, and this leads to some valuable insights. To get the benefits of journaling, you’ll need to make it a daily habit. Writing a journal isn’t hard, but it’s easy to forget to do it some days. To avoid this, you can set up environmental triggers for journaling. For example, if you prefer writing on a computer, you can leave your journal’s word document open throughout the day, so you don’t forget about it. Or, if you use paper, you can put your journal on your bed in the morning so that you remember to write it. You can also set a notification reminder on your phone using your calendar application. Journaling is a powerful tool – and it only takes a few minutes a day to get all the benefits from it. You can download a journal template here to get started. c. Reading Research has shown that, over time, reading can increase your intelligence scores. The more we read, the more ideas we expose ourselves to. This gives us a broader, deeper understanding of the world. Most of us are a bit skeptical of self-help, but a study by Dr. Forrest Scogin showed that self-help books can have a significant impact. In Dr. Scogin’s study, patients with major depression were given a copy of, Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy. Four weeks later, two-thirds of the patients who read the book experienced either significant improvements or recovered entirely from their depression. Of course, the benefits you get from reading are determined by the books you read. If you’re reading specifically to improve your life , autobiographies, philosophy, and high quality self-help books are the most useful books for improving your life (in my opinion). Not every book you read will be equally helpful, but some books can change the entire course of your life. For example, I’ve received emails from multiple successful entrepreneurs who credit The 4 Hour Workweek by Tim Ferris as being the book that opened their minds to becoming online entrepreneurs in the first place. Even if you don’t have any time in your day for reading, you can listen to audiobooks during your commute to and from work or while in the gym. Audible and Scribd both have vast collections of books you can listen to. In a single book you can learn all the best insights the author had throughout their entire life. You can learn from psychologists, philosophers, scientists, businesspeople – you can learn anything you want from the worlds greatest experts, and it’s inexpensive to do so. The value of reading cannot be overestimated.
d. Visualization Research has shown that mental practice is almost as effective as physical practice. The Journal of Consulting Psychology released a study in which job seeking adults were split into two groups. The first group was given traditional interview coaching, while the second group was given both traditional interview coaching and was taught visualization techniques. In the next two months, 66 percent of those in the visualization group found a new job (only 21 percent in the non-visualization group found a new job). Many top performers credit visualization as a major factor in their success. This list includes Connor McGregor, Will Smith, Jim Carey, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Tiger Woods, and Michael Phelps. Visualization is so powerful because it strengthens our vision – when we imagine ourselves achieving our goals, we’re telling our subconscious mind that the future we want to create is both possible and exciting. To make visualization a habit, you can use what’s known as habit stacking. For example, we all have a morning routine in which we do things like brush our teeth, make coffee, etc. If you stack visualization onto that routine, it will be much easier to turn it into an automatic habit. I recommend visualizing between 5 and 10 minutes to get the most out of it. You should visualize whatever inspires you: you might see yourself accomplishing your goals, working hard and enjoying it, receiving prestigious awards, etc. The gist is to visualize yourself in the future accomplishing and getting the things you most want in life. You know your visualization is powerful if it makes you feel energized and positive afterwards.
Conclusion
Meditation, exercise, journaling, reading, and visualization are all scientifically proven to change your life for the better if you make them a habit. Some of these habits may seem overly obvious, yet few people actually use them in their own lives – that’s why I’ve provided you with specific strategies for implementing each habit into your daily routine. The effect of these habits is subtle at first, but builds over time. Perhaps the biggest reason we have trouble integrating new habits into our lives is that we expect a fast, dramatic change, but in reality, the benefits from new behaviors are incredibly subtle. Temper your short-term expectations and you’ll be much more likely to follow through on these habits and reap the long-term rewards.

YOU are the best suicide prevention! [discussion]
I really would like people to understand that Suicide Prevention hotlines are not always the best way to seek help. I once called a Suicide Prevention Hotline in the depths of my bipolar depression only to have the person hang up on me because I said that I might OD on purpose. When I called back the woman angrily describe to me how she does not do "drug talk" or cursing. She seemingly would have been willing to let me kill myself that day just so that she didn't have to hear any talk about drugs or any curse words while she was supposedly trying to prevent people from killing themselves. So I just want to remind people not to pass the buck on to some supposedly helpful Suicide Prevention Hotline that might literally hang up on the people who call. Remember not to pass the buck by telling someone to go talk to somebody else. If you are talking to someone who you know is in danger you can be the person to talk them down. But if you try and get them to call someone else because you don't know how or you think there are other people out there who specialize in that you might be dead wrong.

[Text] As a result of the late Anthony Bourdain’s tragic end, people on various subs are starting to glorify committing suicide. Glorifying suicide glorifies both death AND quitting.
I understand their point: You free yourself of your various pains when you die, which everybody has a lot of, some a lot more than others, so the notion of killing yourself brings you solace in the face of your suffering. That's fucking bullshit. You shouldn't kill yourself unless you are SERIOUSLY SUFFERING and have had enough enjoyment and productivity out of your life to even warrant the thought of giving it up now. Otherwise you don’t have the right.
Now, definitions of 'having the right' and 'suffering' vary, because that's all people talk about nowadays. Extreme leftist hippy drivel from someone with an internet connection: “Oh yeah, life is sad HAHAHA” “I'm suffering HAHAHA” “I wish I had opportunities to improve but I don't oh woe is me.” It's like, no. You have opportunities. Are you suffering really? Truly?
Are your arms plagued with arthritis so much so that you struggle to even wipe your own ass? Is your brain deteriorating so fast that you can't assess the environment outside of your own front doorstep? You getting laughed at by your classmates in school because they were born with the privilege of not being stuck to a wheelchair 24/7 and you weren’t? Are you walking three miles a day so as to get hopefully enough infested dirt water for you and your infant sibling to drink AT LEAST SOMETHING TODAY? Then what the fuck are you complaining about. Those kinds of people have a reason to value what little they have that isn’t them suffering. “Their problems aren’t my own, I still have the right to complain about my existence.” Of course you do, you have the right to do anything, ANYTHING, who cares? Fucking do SOMETHING. Complaining about your present does nothing to fix your future. It’s a non-act and everybody knows you’re not special for doing it. Death is an inevitability, it's going to arrive sometime, why not use up the time you have until then? Nobody likes being wasteful, and you can argue “Oh my time until then is pain and suffering so I'll just hit the eject button.” And fuck over everyone that loves you? And there are those people. Whether it’s your mother, or the person behind the till at the local store, your neighbour who barely talks to you, childhood friends that hear of how you killed yourself. Make no mistake their reactions will be catastrophic. You spread misery, but you’re dead so you don’t feel their pain. They'll never forgive you and they might follow your example if they’re glorifying the same in their head too, and that is the definition of an evil act. Highly unlikely that things are bad enough that they can't get better. Look at what's wrong and CHANGE IT. Fix it and you'll love the rewards of doing so. Excuses on the contrary will just keep you unhappy.
My heart goes out to people that SERIOUSLY consider suicide even once, let alone on a regular basis. I've been there, and I've come out the other side. I used to genuinely believe that I was the reincarnation of a murderer, to deserve such a horrible miserable existence. I've had family members so depressed they went around telling people to kill themselves and then killed them self. It's hard, it's twisted, and it’s fucking evil. People are better than that. Just don't do it, don't think about it. Get on with yourself and get on with life. You have more opportunities from the world than people used to even a century ago.
The 'You can always quit' is a well-natured idea, but one that seriously should not be set in the option of suicide. It should be set in how malleable life is! How things can change, because things can always get better if you put your mind to it! Quit your suffering, don’t quit your life. There's help out there and it really works and you’ll get happiness and true meaning from your life. People will look at you positively stunned you managed to turn it all around. Tell the right someone about your suffering with the intent of helping yourself. You have to fix yourself, get help, change. Enjoy your existence man, all the people that don’t exist aren’t able to.

[Text] Stop fighting yourself and start fighting for yourself.

[text] There is no experience quite like that of driving yourself to the point of wanting to give up and then not giving up.
“There is no experience quite like that of driving yourself to the point of wanting to give up and then not giving up. In that moment of ‘raw reality’...when something inside you asks, How bad do you want it?, an inner curtain is drawn open, revealing a part of you that is not seen except in moments of crisis. And when your answer is to keep pushing, you come away from the trial with the kind of self-knowledge and self-respect that can’t be bought.”

[Text]Fear stops us from trying. We psych ourselves out by saying it needs to be perfect. But thats a lie.
We arent going to get it perfect we arent even going to get it close to perfect. But eventually we will get there. Theres no shame in failing if your adjusting and trying again but if you quit then thats a shame.

[Discussion] Sustaining motivation and follow through?
I have no issues with getting my dander up to do things, however, I have issues with actually following through on things, especially with writing. when I actually get to it I can dump out a short story in a few hours, but If I close the word document for any reason, the project is dead I will not return to it ever. How do I push myself to follow through and keep plugging away at the same project? Turning a firework into a slow burn.
