[Story] When clearing clutter for a yardsale, plan to give some proceeds to charity or someone in need.

My family is currently conducting a yardsale to raise money for my uncle in Phillipines who needs surgery and medication. It isn't major surgery, but if his condition is ignored it will only worsen and may very well lead to death.

I'm a descendent of a long line of pack rats so I've always had trouble of letting things go. Reminding myself that everything we make is going to save a life really puts things into perspective and forces me to evaluate what I need and what is just taking up space.

Whenever I have second thoughts on something I'm struggling to let go I ask myself a series of questions:

  1. Do I need it?
  2. Have I used it in the last 6 months?
  3. Is it of sentimental value?
  4. Can it be easily replaced?
  5. (Regarding books/movies/music) can I find the same thing on the Internet?

It helped me let go of that box of empty jelly jars and giant stack of national geographic magazines and that big dusty elliptical that no one has touched in years.

So if next time you need to motivate yourself in to decluttering, plan on helping someone else out with the money you make. You'll feel better about the things you let go and will be helping somebody who has less.
